Wetlands

RiGHT promotes wetlands protection through our involvement with the San Luis Valley Wetlands Focus Area Committee (FAC). There are over 200,000 acres of wetlands in the San Luis Valley and the majority of these are on private lands. The FAC is a local coalition of landowners, non profit organizations and federal, state and local land and wildlife agencies who work together to identify specific wetlands issues and develop opportunities and solutions for their management, restoration and protection. RiGHT is a key member on this committee and is the fiscal agent to fund the committee’s coordinator.

The FAC has most recently raised $2 million dollars in funding from the North American Waterfowl Conservation Act and other resources to protect, manage and enhance wetlands in the San Luis Valley. In June of 2005, the FAC sponsored a highly successful “Wetlands Tour” of the San Luis Valley. The tour hosted 50 out of town guests representing Great Outdoors Colorado, the Colorado Division of Wildlife, the Colorado Natural Heritage Program, Colorado Wildlife Commissioners, the U.S. National Forest, the Natural Resources Conservation Service, the Bureau of Land Management, the Audubon Society and many more. The Committee also held a reception with over 100 people attending that mixed out of town guests and local residents to celebrate our successes and stress the importance of funding future efforts.
