Rio Grande Headwaters Land Trust Earns National Recognition
The Land Trust Accreditation Commission, an independent program of the Land Trust Alliance, announced last week that the Rio Grande Headwaters Land Trust has been awarded accredited status. “Accredited land trusts meet national quality standards for protecting important natural places and working lands forever,” said Commission Executive Director Tammara Van Ryn. “The accreditation seal lets the public know that the accredited land trust has undergone an extensive, external review of the governance and management of its organization and the systems and policies it uses to protect land.”
"For the Rio Grande Headwaters Land Trust (RiGHT), accreditation provides our landowners with assurances they need in a changing and sometimes uncertain economic climate. They can be confident that RiGHT has earned the respect and stamp of approval from our national association for our practices, our standards and the quality of conservation projects,” says Nancy Butler, RiGHT’s Executive Director.

Keep the Rio Grande Grand Interview with Ray Wright
RiGHT is honored and humbled that Ray Wright's loved ones chose the Rio Grande Headwaters Land Trust as one of the recipients of his memorial donations. Today and in the many many days ahead we'll be working hard to honor his commitment to the San Luis Valley. You can see both Parts 1 and 2 of the video interview we did with Ray for our 2009 art sale by clicking here and here.
“I’ve been farming for 35 years, and lots of times in farming it isn’t a matter of necessarily doing it right or doing it pretty, it’s a matter of getting it down now. And I’ve had a tendency to rush through things. So, a big part of the motivation for me to try this was that I could recognize immediately that it would require patience and attention to detail. And I said if I can slow down enough and pay enough attention and not get in to big of a hurry to finish something, to build a fly rod property will prove something to me personally as far as the ability to slow down and have the journey be as important as the destination.”

Conservation Success for Local Land Trust: Rio Oxbow Ranch Protected
Anyone who has driven the winding “Silver Thread Scenic Byway” along State Highway 149 above Creede has probably had their breath taken away. Not just by the high altitude, but also by the scenic beauty that opens when they round the bend to see the majestic Rio Grande meandering across the valley floor of Antelope Park. Six miles of the river flows through the wide curving oxbows that inspire the name of the spectacular Rio Oxbow Ranch. Across the broad valley, the Weminuche Wilderness rises on the far side and the views are indeed breath taking.
The local Rio Grande Headwaters Land Trust’s conservation efforts has now insured that this view is protected in perpetuity, with completion of the second phase of the conservation easement on the Rio Oxbow Ranch at the end of 2009. Highlights from 2009
2009 was a great year for RiGHT and conservation in the San Luis Valley.
We completed five conservation projects (including four on the Rio Grande) permanently conserving nearly 5,000 acres of agricultural land, wildlife habitat, and open space.
This was RiGHT's most successful year to date. but we couldn't have done it without the landowners, our partners, funders, donors, and volunteers -
a huge thanks to you all! You can read more about these projects and see photos here.
